Arabic SEO Checklist for GCC Businesses
If your website targets customers in Dubai, Riyadh, or Doha, Arabic SEO is not a translation task bolted onto an English site. Search behaviour, query phrasing, and trust signals differ across the Gulf, and Google needs clear language and locale signals to serve the right version to the right user.
This checklist is built for marketing leads and founders who already have a bilingual or Arabic-first site—or are planning one—and want a structured audit before investing in content or paid ads.
Set the language foundation first
Before keywords, confirm that Arabic pages are genuinely Arabic. Mixed-language title tags, English navigation on Arabic URLs, and auto-translated body copy confuse both users and crawlers.
- Use
lang="ar"on Arabic HTML documents anddir="rtl"on the root element. - Keep URL slugs readable: Arabic slugs are valid, but consistent Latin slugs with Arabic content also work if your CMS supports them cleanly.
- Publish unique Arabic titles and meta descriptions; do not duplicate the English page with swapped brand names.
- Pair every Arabic URL with its English counterpart using hreflang (see our guide on hreflang for Arabic and English sites).

On-page checklist for Arabic content
Arabic readers often search with longer, conversational phrases and local brand-category combinations. Optimize for intent, not literal English keyword exports.
- Place the primary topic in the first 100 words naturally—in Modern Standard Arabic or Gulf-appropriate wording your audience actually uses.
- Use descriptive H2 headings that match how customers describe the problem (for example, "تكلفة موقع الشركة" not vague marketing labels).
- Add alt text to images in Arabic; decorative images can use empty alt.
- Internal links should use Arabic anchor text pointing to other Arabic pages on
/blogand core commercial pages like pricing and contact. - Avoid stuffing Latin brand keywords into Arabic paragraphs unless they are established search terms in your market.
Technical and local signals
GCC local SEO blends language with geography. A Saudi service business and a UAE ecommerce brand need different emphasis, but both benefit from the same technical baseline.
- Submit an XML sitemap that lists Arabic and English URLs separately—no redirect chains between language versions.
- Implement canonical tags on each language version; do not canonicalize Arabic to English "because English ranks better."
- Use LocalBusiness or Organization schema with
inLanguagewhere appropriate.
